30 years. Can it really be 30 years? l think to myself. October 2021, October 1991. “Yes, it’s 30 years”, I said aloud after running the math in my head again for the millionth time. Before graduate school, before banking, before buying a house, before so many things, three surgeries in one year and the last one lifesaving. Thank God for the tenacity and quick thinking of Mom and Dad. “They saved my life.”

Well, you can say that again!

“Mercury! What are you doing here?”

Darling, I just finished retrograde and decided to peep in on you only to find you sulking again. Seriously, you are the most bummed out triple planet child I have.

“Must be my Saturn axis,” I mutter under my breath.

Oh Saturn. I know he’s been helping you out. Slowed down the clock so you could get your parents home in time for visitors when you were running late after the homecoming skits yesterday.

“Well, I did ask him for help!”

And steadfast and reliable he always comes through.

“Yes, he and Chronos have been great friends to me. That’s what I was thinking of just now, Mercury, time management, boundaries, restrictions and borrowing time.”

If you would stop playing your little time altering games with them, you’d see that I’ve been hard at work making life move ahead for you with, dare I say, breakneck speed.

“You could have chosen better words there.”

What???

“Breakneck? Really?”

Sorry my dear, I forgot about that, what with all your reminiscing about borrowed time!

“Gosh, Mercury! This incident is even prior to the neck injury that sidelined my singing career.”

OK, I’ll bite! What’s the deal with the 30 years, Sweetie?

“You mean you don’t remember? I bet Saturn remembers. He gave me some serious lessons to live out back then.”

Sweetheart, I did just finish up retrograde so I forgive me if I’m a little wonky at the moment.

“No, you’ve moved on to the next best thing. That’s how it goes with you Mercury. I get it. Nothing, not even a triple planet daughter, is going to stop the movements of the quicksilver magician.”

Refresh my memory.

“Late October 1991, I hadn’t been feeling well for a few weeks and no one could pinpoint the problem. Dad had sat with me all night in the emergency room only for them to give me a pain killer then send me home. None of the nurses or doctors knew what was going on when I showed them the bucket of vomit that looked like coffee grinds.”

Your grandmother knew….

“Yes, of course she did, she was a master healer, a nurse whose student career started by caring for a patient with leprosy no one else would get close to. She knew when I described it to her, but that was after the commotion. After I sipped from the cauldron.”

Cauldron? You’ve never mentioned sipping from a cauldron before.

“It was just a dream. A dream I had when I was in the hospital. I remember there was a big Halloween storm that year, a nor’easter. I remember the wind and the rain pounding against the windows of my hospital room. I remember there was lightning and I remember the older lady I shared my room with. She had a thick accent, hard to place. I never did figure out where she was from. Anyway, the nurses and her doctor couldn’t understand her and I ended up translating.’

I’m sure that helped her a lot.

“They just didn’t listen.”

But they listened to you.

“Yes, they listened to me. While they were asking her, ‘What? Do you mean milk? Do you want milk?’, when what she was really saying was, ‘My leg. My leg hurts.’

“It wasn’t anything special that I did, Mercury. I’d been in the room with her for days so I learned her cadence. Every language has its own melody. Mercury. Once you tune into the melody you can begin to understand and in this case it’s not even as if she was speaking another language. She was speaking English!

I talked to her. I called the nurses for her. I told them what she needed. I also questioned my own treatment. I took notes in the composition book I asked my parents to bring to the hospital. I made sure they read off of the various notes from my different doctors. You might even say Saturn forced me to step up and act as a voice for both of us. He also gave me the determination to learn all I could about my health. So now, thanks to the gifts I have from both of you, I am still healthy 30 years later.

I have been wondering lately whatever happened to that older lady. She was about my grandmas’s age then. She had family. They visited once in the week I was there and then I guess they came back to take her home the day after Halloween while I was sleeping.”

So she went home after Halloween but you stayed.

“Yes, I ended up having a low grade fever so they kept me. It turned out to be the result of a wound infection. Once that resolved, my temperature went back to normal and I got to go home. Still, I’ll always remember the witch’s visit on Halloween.”

Witch’s visit? How did that happen in the hospital?

“The hospital was pretty full and some adults were placed on the pediatric ward. I was one of them. We actually got a lot more attention from the nurses because of it and the night nurses were the best! Grandma worked the night shift at her hospital back when my mom was little now that I think about it.”

Go on, the God of Communication loves a good story.

“Like I said, it was Halloween and being on the pediatric ward meant there were a lot of kids who wouldn’t be going trick or treating so some adult volunteers dressed up and brought Halloween to them. There was a witch and a vampire who came to our room to say, ‘Happy Halloween’, but they couldn’t stay long because of the impending storm. Later that night, it was very quiet on the floor. My roommate had fallen asleep and I was up listening to the rain and the wind. It was pretty scary, like a hurricane. The hospital actually had to switch over to their back up electrical generator.

I must have fallen asleep because a remember waking up with it still being dark and the wind howling around the hospital towers. That’s when I saw her, the witch with the cauldron. She was standing at the foot of my bed.

She was everything you’d imagine a traditional Halloween witch to be. Older, female, no make up, messy hair, old raggedy clothing; but the cauldron, the cauldron was spectacular! It was silver and seemed to shimmer like Mother of Pearl. She waved her hand motioning me to get out of bed and walk over to her. After all I’d been through already, I figured, Why not? What could possibly happen?

As I got closer, I saw that she was stirring the cauldron not with a ladle but with a sword, a curvy silver sword. She was humming some sort of lullaby and even though the song was new to me I began to hum along. We hummed and she stirred. Steam rose from the broth inside the cauldron but there was no sense of heat. It really was the strangest thing.”

What else do you remember?

“We stood there for a while humming while she stirred the broth and then she reached into the pockets of her dress and pulled out two small silver cups. They reminded me of camping mugs or something from Little House On The Prairie. She dunked both mugs in the broth and then held one out to me.

She smiled. I nervously fidgeted then took the cup. She drank hers, then smiled again. I raised the cup and drank the broth. It tasted so good. It really hit the spot, just like Grandma’s chicken soup. I distinctly remember I smiled.

She held out her hand for me to pass the cup back. She returned both cups to the pockets of her dress, picked up the sword and again began humming and stirring. She motioned to me to return to bed. I lay there for a while just humming until I eventually dosed off.

I woke up late the next morning to find that my roommate had already gone home.

It’s been 30 years since that Halloween and I’ve been blessed with all of this borrowed time. I’ve just been wondering what I’ve done with it. Have I lived as I was meant too? Have I done all the good I could have? I’m not depressed, Mercury. I’m just pondering.”

Seems to me you’ve been using your voice to speak for others ever since, especially in health related circumstances.

“How do you mean?”

Think about it. It started with your hospital roommate, then your husband, your grandmother, your sister in law, your brother, your nephew, your mother, your father, your sister, your best friends, your co-workers, your students and I’d even venture to include the hungry and the homeless.

Didn’t your family physician once tell you you missed your calling and should have been a doctor?

“Yes, he did, but seeing as I had difficulty dissecting the frog in high school biology class I figured it wasn’t the right career path.”

And your friend, the artist, it seems he was right when he told you, “You’re gonna save a lot of lives with that voice.”

You know what I think, Kathleen. I think that Halloween Witch shared her magic with you by letting you drink the cauldron broth.

“It was just a dream, Mercury!”

Was it? You had an older roommate, a stranger, who was ill and needed help. You showed kindness. Isn’t that how most magical stories play out. Those who ignore the old people, the travelers, the trees and the animals in need, are usually transformed into something nasty while those who offer kindness are rewarded with blessings beyond their wildest dreams. In your case it’s 30 years of borrowed time and counting!

“Do you really think so?”, moving to stare out the kitchen window.

30 years of spontaneous remission. I have no doubt.

“I wonder who she was…”, my voice trailing off as I looked out on the beautiful fall afternoon.

If anyone can figure it out it’s you, my triple planet daughter! Now, put on your research witch hat and solve this mystery!

With a flash, Mercury was gone.

To be continued…
