“What more can I do?”, I thought to myself. “I’ve put all of these great resources out into the world for FREE and still women are being undermined by The Sexy Voice Hoax!” (sigh) “Sitting here staring at my computer isn’t going to do any good. I need to go for a walk.”
I walked along the Peconic River Trail looking for guidance from nature, hoping the wind and the water would speak to me. As I strolled along the riverside I heard music being played in the distance. Curious, I decided to follow its sound until I came to a clearing. I smiled as I recognized the source of the hypnotic melody.
“What brings you here, Kathleen?”, said the musical goddess.
Me: Oh, Goddess Saraswati, I am struggling to find a more effective way to use my gifts in the service of others.”
Saraswati: My dear, you do that on a daily basis. Your voice has saved lives, raised money for housing, educational supplies, even toilet paper for displaced veterans and survivors of domestic violence.
Me: I do as much as I can, that is true, Goddess, but how do I combat my Nemesis and The Sexy Voice Hoax?
Saraswati: You cannot take on every cause, my dear. You will exhaust yourself! Sit. Listen for a while.
I hummed quietly while the Goddess played the veena. Lost in my musical reverie I was startled when she spoken again.
Saraswati: Kathleen, stop sulking. You have to accept that you are doing everything you can. We both know there are exercises that can make a voice more pleasing, charismatic, and yes, even, sexy, without doing any harm. Why do you feel defeated?
Me: (sigh) Oh Goddess, the cookie cutter approach of The Sexy Voice Hoax con artist really frustrates me. Mortal voices can be beautiful, empowering and sexy in their natural optimal pitch range. I’m not much into sports, barring figure skating, but I call the optimal pitch range the voice’s “home base” because it’s something many mortals can relate to. Using your voice’s home base increases the stamina, projection and level of vitality conveyed by the voice. Anyone can have a voice they love and one that others love to listen to.
Saraswati: And you do this with those who have no musical ability?
Me: Yes, Goddess, through your gift of language. Many of my clients are not musicians. I need to use non-musical techniques to help them.
Saraswati: My guidance, Kathleen, is to ignore The Sexy Voice Hoax perpetrator and focus your energy around this topic. What are the three easiest things your fellow mortals can do on their own to find this home base as you call it?
Me: Well, Goddess, believe it or not, the number one thing is humming.
Saraswati: So simple! No wonder the other mortals don’t believe you!
Me: Um…Hmm…Ah…Yes, Goddess. Most mortals innately gravitate to our optimal pitch range when we make the sound Um…Hmmm… as if we are non-verbally agreeing with what someone else is saying.
After we practice this a few times, I ask my mortal clients to extend the “mmm” sound, this increases forward resonance, adding a bell-like clarity and natural amplification to the voice.
When they have mastered that part, I then ask them turn the “mmm” into an “Ah” sound and give them simple sentences to practice.
The whole thing put together works like this, Goddess.
Um… Hmm…Ah… Hello, Goddess, how are you, today?
Saraswati: You see, that’s the problem right there, Kathleen. You’ve made it too easy for them. Mortals prefer to tie themselves in knots with difficulties. No pain, no gain, is the mortal way.
Me: But Goddess, we both know vocal freedom is about simplicity. Using our Goddess gifts to speak up clearly, confidently, and eloquently in any situation. And the sexy part? That’s about communicating fully with the essence of our true self, not using a fake voice that conforms to another’s idea of sexy.
Oh Goddess, if mortals but knew the power of placing their hands over their heart when preparing for a difficult conversation, we could put an end to so much misunderstanding.
Sarawati: You know this is not an easy path you walk, my dear. You will need to continually remind your fellow mortals of the ease with which they are given the ability to speak or sing.
Me: I realize that now, Goddess. I will not let The Sexy Voice Hoax stop me! I will keep doing my thing! I will speak out whenever I come across bad voice advice and call upon the goddesses for help.
Thank you so much, Goddess! I’ve received so much divine voice guidance from you and Venus and Aphrodite. It’s got me thinking about the possibility of creating a class in which groups of mortals could be exposed to your wisdom. Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to hurry home. I’ve got a blog to write!
Epilogue:
Back home, Kathleen is inspired to continue her dialogue with the Goddesses by interviewing a different goddess each month for her Voice Illuminations blog. It is so well received that she creates a monthly Divine Voice Goddess Blog and a FREE Goddess Reading Video Series Gift!
“Saraswati: …Mortals prefer to tie themselves in knots with difficulties. No pain, no gain, is the mortal way.” Talk about Goddess Wisdom! I have really enjoyed the candid canter you’ve shared with us . through these Goddess Conversations Kathleen and very much look forward to the monthly installments!
Yes, I find so many prefer the hard road, but all I can do is keep going! I’m glad you’re looking forward to more!
A very wise man once taught me: “Do what you can, with what you have, from where you are.” That’s all any of us can do, and it is always a blessing to someone, somewhere.
I like that, Barb. A very wise man, indeed. Thank you!
I snickered when I read, “mortals prefer to tie themselves in knots with difficulties. No pain, no gain, is the mortal way.” Wow. Isn’t that the truth for so many individuals! Thanks for sharing this grand wisdom and bringing awareness to the Sexy Voice Hoax. I’m enjoying this series!
Thank you, CK! I find my students remember things better when I make them a bit humorous. It is so true though isn’t it?!
I know you’ve brought humor into your post, Kathleen, and I appreciate it.
Sadly we mortals don’t realize or accept that our voices are unique and we need to focus on bringing out our best rather than imitate that which might not work for us.
Thank you!
Thank you! I am finding this very much with women in corporate life. The very personality traits that provide unique viewpoint and professional expression are squashed by popular culture. Many of us are finding ourselves again in midlife.
I adore this and you have reminded me I used to do this with my higher self regularly and have inspired me to look more closely at the goddesses
Thank you
Thank you Suzie! That is exactly what inspired me to write this series!
Love the way you tell the story of this magical experience. So much wisdom here. Thank you for the beautiful way you shared
Thank you, Laura! I am happy it resonated with you.
